The MusBA in brief
Like the 15 largest regional museums, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux was created by consular decree on 1 September 1801 from the collections of the Museum Central des Arts. It is also the oldest municipal museum in the city.
Its permanent collections are housed in the Lacour and Bonheur wings and offer an overview of European art from the 15th to the 20th century, with works by Perugino, Titian, Veronese, Brueghel de Velours, Van Dyck, Rubens, Chardin, Delacroix, Corot, Rodin, Kokoschka, Picasso, Matisse and others. This encyclopaedic overview is complemented by a strong regional identity, as evidenced by the works of artists from Bordeaux such as Lacour and Taillasson, Redon, Marquet, Dupas and Lhote. Its collection of paintings, sculptures and graphic arts is showcased through numerous loans, between 200 and 300 each year, to French and foreign museums.
The museum also offers a rich multidisciplinary cultural programme and a dynamic mediation policy, offering both independent and guided tours designed for all audiences.
Since 1939, the Galerie des Beaux-Arts has housed the MusBA’s major temporary exhibitions in a building characteristic of the “classical modernism” of the interwar period.
