MNR code (National Museums Recovery - Musées Nationaux Récupération)
You may find a golden rosette bearing the inscription “Œuvre spoliée” (looted artwork) on the label of certain works.

During the Second World War, the Nazis confiscated the property of Jews, Freemasons, Communists and opponents of the regime. The looted artworks, which were recovered after the war, were gathered together by the Musées Nationaux and marked with the acronym MNR (Musées Nationaux Récupération).

They are on display in various museums throughout France and may be claimed at any time by their former owners or their descendants. To find out more, go to the Artworks seeking owners page.
