Inter-museum tour: Mission Port de la Lune, la commission UNESCO passe à l’action
Texte

Discover a project based on “Bordeaux, Port of the Moon” for secondary schools.

Objectives
Discover what World Heritage means through the example of “Bordeaux, Port of the Moon”

  • Develop critical thinking: how do we define heritage?
  • Express an opinion, give reasons, debate, take a position.
  • Discover Bordeaux’s cultural institutions and heritage through this common theme.
  • Encourage students to get involved through role-playing.

Who is it for?
9-18 years

How the project works
Pupils are asked to take on the role of a committee of World Heritage experts tasked with identifying the elements that meet the criteria for the inscription of “Bordeaux, Port of the Moon” on the World Heritage List.
They carry out an investigation to refine the components and thus work towards the continuous improvement of an object, our knowledge of it and its promotion. To do this, they must understand the reasons for the inclusion on the list and visit the site to discover the city and find out more about its cultural institutions.

A “commission investigation booklet” guides them around the sites and helps them to observe, question and refine the attributes of outstanding universal value. This principle encourages them to get involved, puts them in a real-life situation and guides them in their thinking.

The project can be broken down into a number of elements that the teacher can combine as they wish, giving the project the scope they want; from half a day to several days, anything is possible.

Since 2015, the visitor services department at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux has been promoting the “major national cause” of gender equality. It offers a guided or self-guided tour, accessible to primary and secondary school pupils, entitled Art through the lens of gender inequality. This tour is part of the academic programme Bougeons sans Bouger (Let’s move without moving)

Discover pictorial works and sculptures and what they tell us about the relationship between women and men. How do they shape identities around the masculine and feminine? What role have female artists played in the history of art?

This tour invites students to explore works from the permanent collections of the Musée des Beaux-Arts focusing on female and male subjects in art, and on several prominent female artists: from the fascinating Lavinia Fontana (1552–1614), a female painter of the Renaissance, to Impressionist artists such as Berthe Morisot (1841-1895) and Mary Cassatt (1844-1926), and the famous Bordeaux artist Rosa Bonheur (1868-1951), a world-renowned animal painter.
